to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius (page 5 of 5)
Driving by car from “Tre Cancelle” to Pompeii:
Distance approximately 130 km / 81 miles (journey time approximately 2 hours)
Travelling by train to Pompeii:
Take the train from Formia station to Naples Central station at Piazza Garibaldi. Then walk downstairs to find the Circumvesuviana train system (a privately run narrow gauge railway). For Pompeii you need to get to the station named Pompeii Scavi, also sometimes known as "Villa dei Misteri", which is just outside the entrance to Pompeii (journey time 25 minutes).
Driving from “Tre Cancelle” to Herculaneum / Ercolano:
Distance of approximately 117 km / 73 miles, journey time approximately 1 hour 54 minutes.
Travelling by train to Herculaneum / Ercolano:
Take the train from Formia station to Naples Central railway station. Then walk downstairs to find the Circumvesuviana train system. For Herculaneum / Ercolano you need to get to the station named Ercolano Scavi (journey time 25 minutes). From the station it is 600 metres to the excavations. From the station Piazzale turn left onto the Via Vittorio Veneto, then at the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto Via 4 Novembre. The archaeological site of Herculaneum will be on the right (less than 10 minute walk).
To get to Mount Vesuvius and the Vesuvius National Park, it is probably simplest to travel by car. A road leads up to within 200 metres of the crater. Further access is only on foot, following the trail that leads up towards the summit. From here there are panoramic views of the Bay of Naples.
